Typhoon Disaster Relief

In November of 2013, Super Typhoon Yolanda also known as Typhoon Haiyan, hit the central Philippines with peak winds of 190 MPH. Eleven million people were affected by the storm, with estimated damages of $4.55 billion dollars. This was and still is the strongest typhoon to make landfall in recorded history. Over 6000 lives were lost, along with houses, coconut farms, fishing boats and other sources of livelihood. Particularly hard hit were coastal areas, where fishing is the primary source of income.

The Relief
After initial relief and rebuilding efforts, sustainable livelihood projects were needed. In Palompon, Leyte, a hard-hit coastal area, most fishing boats had been destroyed and people were moving out of the coastal areas to find work. Global Impact wanted to be part of a long term solution to help those who had lost everything. In 2014 Global Impact partnered with Seeds Of Dignity (SOD) who implemented a project to provide fishing boats to several small, coastal communities. One by one, boats were added until now almost 100 boats are operational with 27 of them provided by Global Impact and it’s donors.
How It Works
Boats are not initially given to families to own them, but must instead be “earned” over a four-year period of time through operating the fishing boat for income and maintaining it’s functionality through proper care. Agreements are signed and every week boat recipients pay the equivalent of $2 into a maintenance fund cooperative. At the end of four successful years, the family then owns the boat.
Stewardship
Boat recipients are coached and trained by their peers on fishing techniques. Stewardship training is provided on managing finances and equipment. For many of the fishermen, this is the first time for them to participate in a savings cooperative and to set aside funds for future maintenance needs. All fishing families are also being spiritually mentored through their local church community.
Key Indicators
The project is regularly monitored. Key indicators are that families are staying in their communities, are able to receive enough income to provide three meals per day, are able to make repairs or additions to their homes and can to send their children to school. For these coastal families, these boats are not only for fishing but are their means of transportation.
Project Update
It is remarkable that years later all 100 boats are still in service, well maintained, and providing for the daily needs of these families. This is a unique project and very rare that a livelihood project would achieve the success rate seen in this program. It is the operational management of SOD that has been the key to success.
Earthquake Disaster Relief

Starting in October 2019, a series of intense earthquakes that reached 6.9 magnitude rocked Mindanao, Southern Philippines causing devastation in many areas. Reports state that over 380,000 individuals have been displaced living in make-shift shelters.

The Relief
The December 2019 relief operation and psychosocial intervention was combined with our annual Christmas Outreach. Thousands attended the full day program which included medical and dental services, distribution of family packs (food and hygiene products), interactive games, raffles, play therapy, art therapy and other creative psychosocial activities. About 100 staff and volunteers from Davao City travelled hours to this remote area where all were severely affected by the earthquakes.
The people were incredibly grateful for the food, goods, program and services. They said they didn’t feel forgotten in the midst of tragedy. Global Impact, thanks to the generosity of international donors, delivered timely goods and programs to 700 families ( 3,500 individuals) who were hard hit by the earthquakes.
Marawi Siege Disaster Relief Operations

The Relief
Global Impact Philippines extended relief support to 60 displaced families (about 300 individuals) at an evacuation camp in the neighboring city of Iligan, giving them relief packs, medicines and various psychosocial interventions (trauma relief and emotional debriefing).
A month later, in July 2017, the Global Impact team went back for a more extensive relief and psychosocial intervention to 360 families (1800 individuals) at 2 evacuation camps in Iligan City.
In August of the same year, Global Impact joined a group of peace advocates from Davao City to give portable electric fans to 1,500 families who were temporarily sheltered at an evacuation camp just outside of Marawi City. On the same relief operation, Global Impact Team conducted psychosocial interventions to about 500 youth and children.
In December, 8 months later, thousands of families were still living in sparse conditions in evacuation centers surviving just on donated goods of rice, sardines and other essentials. Global Impact wanted to do something meaningful during the Christmas season and selected 60 families for a shopping experience at the local mall. The mothers were gathered, grouped and given a budget to buy groceries for their family. It was significant for them as most had not shopped since the time they had to flee their homes.
Many of the mothers were in tears and were overwhelmed with joy. While the mother’s shopped with the GI team and volunteers, the children also had their own special program conducted by GI. It was a phenomenal experience for all. The next day on the December outreach, 1000 families in an evacuation center were impacted by a full day of programs and meals for all.
In May 2018, Global Impact conducted two Kids Camps at two evacuation sites, with a total of 600 kids participating. At the same time, as the Islamic communities celebrated their Rhamadan (month-long fasting), Global Impact together with partners Far Eastern Broadcasting Company (FEBC) – owned 1197 DXFE and the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF) Region XI, implemented the “Share the Blessing” Project which gave out freshly cooked dinner meals (steamed rice, 2 dishes, dessert/fruits) to 500 families for a total of 10 days, with an overall total of 25,000 hot meals prepared and distributed for “Iftar” (end-of-fast dinner meals).

What’s different about being a Global Impact educational scholar is that I am encouraged to do service to other people. It’s not all about academics. It also includes my spiritual growth.

She pops out with beautiful wings and takes a quick turn as the group of kids smile and adore her transformation. The small caterpillar has now become a beautiful butterfly.

Looking back, she never imagined that the little girl from a faraway island village who had to study her lessons alone, in the dark of the night, with a small lampara would be able to go this far.
