With a shy smile and a friendly vibe, John Lemuel (JL) looks like an ordinary college student. However, behind his simple persona is an excellent student, an emerging leader and a young man that yearns to leverage technology to help communities.
Confessing that he is an introvert, JL recounts that during his early teenage years he was mostly interested in studying, research, and his computer – until he joined Global Impact’s annual Catalyst Leadership Academy (CLA).
CLA molded and sharpened his leadership and interpersonal skills – he went from being a CLA participant to a CLA team leader. He explained it as a season where “I cracked out of my shell.” He was amazed that he developed the ability to lead people who were even older than him.
Seeing his developing leadership skills and willingness to serve in various Global Impact programs, he was admitted to Global Impact’s Educational Scholarship Program. Because of his passion for invention and improving the lives of people through technology, JL chose to major in Computer Science.
During his time as a university student, he was elected as Governor for the Institute of Computing Local Council where he served thousands of students at the University of Southeastern Philippines. He admits that it was challenging but it led to a lot of personal growth.
He also studied in China at the prestigious Jingling Institute of Technology as part of an educational exchange program. JL was chosen amongst thousands of other students to represent the University and the Philippines.
Despite his stellar achievements, JL never forgets to give back. He explains that he is passionate about helping others. He participated in Global Impact’s “Impact Club”, a program in local public elementary schools where children learn basic principles of their value and worth as treasured creations of God, how to make good choices, how to recognize the lies of a trafficker and how to stay safe from any form of abuse.
He adds that he wants to use technology to help people maximize their time. He is positive that he will be able to continue to make people’s lives better.
JL shares that what sets the Global Impact Educational Scholarship program apart is that he is encouraged and inspired to serve others. “It’s not all about academics. It also includes my spiritual growth.”
He would like to remind all young people: “Don’t trust in your strength or your knowledge but instead, trust in God who knows everything.”
Global Impact’s Educational Sponsorship Program strives to change the future of youth in the Philippines by providing them with quality education in which they would not otherwise have access.
